OMMS Student Speaks at Board Meeting Thurs 1/26/12 – Congratulations to Talaeya (2013) who spoke at the Board of Education with other School Girls Unite members from Hammond and Harper's Choice Middle Schools. The girls provided an update about how SGU members
here in Howard County were instrumental in helping the United Nations declare October 11 as The Day of the Girl Child.
Second Annual OMMS Spaghetti Dinner Fri 1/20/12 – Approximately 245 OMMS family members and staff attended and were served a dinner catered by Mama Lucia's. The event was sponsored by OMMS and the OMMS PTSA. The evening encompassed all of our 3 C's; connection, curriculum and collaboration. Families not
only enjoyed a wonderful dinner, they also engaged in conversation with other families and participated in curriculum reinforcement activities made available by our staff. These activities included conversation starters, math mindbenders, social studies and English questions. Families were also encouraged to participate in karaoke and improvisation activities in the gym. Donations were brought for the Grassroots Shelter. The evening was a huge success!
188 Students Make 1st Qtr Honor Rolls Mon 11/21/11 – At a thrilling honors assembly that included a performance of Michael Jackson's "Thriller," OMMS welcomed 188 students to our first quarter honor rolls. Gold: 17 students Silver: 117 students Bronze: 54 students Congratulations to our students for their fantastic achievements!
Stein Presents in Chicago Thurs 11/10/11 – OMMS Special Education teacher Yochanon Stein presented at The
International Dyslexia Association Conference in Chicago, IL. He spoke on the topic of Integrated Group Experiential Learning, the dynamics of how to set up a weeklong session for experiential learning within a school for children with language-based learning differences. See the details on page 37.
Reichl Presents in PA Tues 11/8/11 – OMMS Band teacher Lori Schwartz Reichl presented a music session regarding music program formation at the Pennsylvania Music Educator Association's District 11 In-Service Conference at Montgomery County Community College in Blue Bell, PA. In addition, she has been chosen to guest conduct the Anne Arundel County Public
School System's All-County Middle School Band Concert, to be held at Meade High School on Sat 2/4/11.
Mathalon Team Brings Home 3 Ribbons Sat 10/29/11 – OMMS students participated in the 2011 Maryland Mathalon. The event was held at Meade Middle School and hosted 50 teams from around the state. Edwin (2012),
Kayla and Max (2013), and Hailey (2014) participated in an individual written round, a hands-on inventions round, and a team problem-solving round. Kayla's inventions team earned 1st place, Hailey's inventions team earned 3rd place and Max's team earned 5th place. Congratulations to all team members on a job well done!
OMMS Student Speaks at Latin American Institute Sat 10/29/11 – Congratulations to OMMS student Heidi (2012), who was selected to represent middle school students by speaking at the Latin American Institute this past Sat 10/29/11. Heidi spoke and answered questions about the benefits of participating in the G/T program to a room of parents from around the county. Our own Ms. Teresa Norman translated for the session. Thank you to both Heidi and Ms. Norman for sharing all the wonderful
opportunities here at OMMS with the larger community.
Saunderson Presents at MEGS Tues 10/4/11 – OMMS GT Resource teacher Karen Saunderson presented at the Maryland Educators for Gifted Students (MEGS) conference on how to use authentic research with students, focusing on the accomplishments of OMMS School Girls Unite students.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month at OMMS Weds 9/28/11 – OMMS celebrates Breast Cancer Awareness Month by sporting their PINK and wearing hats. Proceeds went to Susan G. Komen Maryland Race for the Cure to fund research and mammograms for local women in Maryland.

OMMS Students Raise and Release Trout April 2011 – After raising rainbow trout in the classroom since the start of the new year, OMMS students released the trout into the Middle Patuxent River with the help of Trout in the Classroom. |
