Falcon News TV Production
7th & 8th graders create a daily, live television broadcast using advanced level journalism and technology skills. Being able to get to school by 7:15 is a requisite. Individual training is provided as well as monthly crew meetings. Anchors and technicians are needed. (6th graders can get involved during the second semester)
Middle School Book Club
6th, 7th, & 8th graders meet monthly for a thought-provoking discussion of high-quality literature. Several students from each middle school may also participate in the monthly Middle School Book Club discussion at Barnes & Noble in Ellicott City. Sign-up form and list of this year’s titles are available from Ms. Saunderson.
Envirothon
This is an opportunity for 7th graders who are interested in environmental science to participate in the Howard County Junior Envirothon. Teams of 4 students from county middle schools train for events in the areas of wildlife habitats, watershed concepts, forestry, and soils. This year’s event will be held on October 29th at the Howard County Conservancy’s Mt. Pleasant Farm in Woodstock.
Black Saga
6th, 7th & 8th graders in the Black Saga instructional seminar engage in an in-depth study of the African American contributions to our country’s history and culture. Participants strive to become experts in African American history before participating in the school-level teams. Students study via books and the Internet to discover answers to over 700 questions. Qualifying students proceed to a state-wide competition at the University of Maryland at College Park.
Debate
An opportunity for 7th and 8th grade students to learn persuasive speaking and debate skills.
Math Olympiads
An opportunity for 6th and 7th grade students with an interest in math to develop creative problem solving skills. Students complete a monthly challenge during CORE or math class.
